I think it's a great way to build yourself.... However, the first rule to find out is if you actually dig the work you are doing? don't you think that the question can be answered only when you have done a few types of work. Not all can afford to experiment. Then the argument can shift and you may just have to Like what you do and make it your calling... Interests are a matter of choice. Do you have any method of finding out what actually is your calling... and how do you find the strength enough to say "This is it".............

Slacker Manager: Fast track yourself

I think most of the people that read this blog probably went to school with me at one time or another heres a pretty good article that, I think, relates to all of us as we begin (or have already begun) our careers.

Isnt everyone missing one point. Not everyone is capable of being fast tracked. You have to be smarter than the average bear, and it doesnt hurt if you look better than the average bear either. Some people are more inclined or have more skill and therefore are capable of being fasttracked.

I was trying to think the best way to describe how I fast track myself and I finally figured it out: My way of forcing myself to learn and develop constantly is to always be in a job where I am in over my head. As soon as I feel that a job is easy or that I am on cruise control I know it is time to move on.

The article is extremely interesting and impressing. I had similar ideas, but certainly not as developed as yours.

One of the problems that can happen is the fact that, if you work very hard, your boss may think "hey, he gets a lot done" - and flood you with work. This is a deadly spiral.. show them that you are very capable, and they will push you to the max.

Good advice, and something I've been trying hard to live since graduation in 1999. I think so far it has worked pretty well as I am managing people up to 10 years older than me but naturally a perpetual discontent has me wanting more.

Assume more responsibility than you are paid for. This is the easiest way to get the experience for your next promotion. Help with the budget. Help with HR. Help with briefing documents. Offer to lead projects or facilitate important changes/initiatives. Don't assume responsibility for everything -- some things have far more value than others, and doing too much will mean you do nothing well. But do choose some important things that are beyond your current scope and do them very well. When the next opportunity comes up, you will already have proven yourself as capable of doing it.

And manage your expectations -- the more senior in the organisation you go, the slower your rise -- there is only one CEO, so even if there are five high performing managers under the CEO, only one of them can take the slot (of course, you can always take a job elsewhere, but I think people often underestimate the power of a personal network in an organisational).
