FEAR: Extraction Point Reviewed

So I finally finished the game this weekend. I managed to take my time and really enjoy it.
As most of you know the game picks up right where the first left off. You’re now stuck in the city looking for a way out. Luckily not everyone died in the helicopter crash so you’ve got some “company” for bit. Well, atleast until they’re all slaughtered and killed in the most unspeakable of ways. But that’s just par for the course.

Anyways, you’re making your way through the city and the clones are up and doin their thang again. So you get those always happy battles with them. Couple of new guns to play with. There’s this laser beam thing. Looks kinda like the particle beam cannon except it shoots a continuous stream of red laser. It’s not bad. Doesn’t drop a whole lot, so it’s not a weapon you want to replace with one of your more standard carries. Like the shotgun and the assault rifle. There’s also the minigun. They let you play with that in the demo. It’s still fun as hell. Though I kind of wished for more situations to use it in. The soldiers end up being too smart and they use cover and all that so you don’t often get the chance to just hold the trigger down and spray the area down with lead. I mean, you could. But then you’d look kinda silly having wasted 300 rounds on nothing. Though if you add up the amount of ammo I wasted shooting into shadows and at Alma’s ghostly form I guess it might be close to 300 rounds. There’s also a new “grenade” to make use of. It’s a deployable turret. It’s not as useful as you might think. Only a few places where you make use of it, considering that you’re usually moving forward stopping only to pick up the weapons of your fallen enemies. Basically you throw it like a grenade. It sticks to where it landed (roof, wall) and begins shooting at the bad guys.

The game is good. They keep you in buildings or hallways (like usual) for most of it. Was a little excited at first because you’re up on the street and I think that would have been kinda fun to wander the streets a bit more. Making it slightly more open ended, but oh well, they quickly move you inside once things get going. One complaint among many positives.

To be honest, I didn’t find the first half of the game to be as spooky as the original. But that’s maybe because I kind of expected things now. I was expecting stuff to jump out at me and to be in the shadows giggling. That being said, you’ll notice I said the first half of the game. The latter part, however, ensures that I will never enter a hospital. Ever. Again. I will make sure I die in the ambulance before they take me in.

All in all I was really pleased with my $25 purchase. I got what I paid for and more. It’s definitely what it should be, an expansion pack, and it delivers on that and even serves as an interim to what might be a sequel. Which brings me to my next thought.

I would like to open up any discussion as to the ending of FEAR EP. About what you think happened and if it means there’s more to come. I’ve tried to keep the review as spoiler free as possible but don’t be afraid to let loose in the comments. People can ignore reading those if they don’t want have the game spoiled.

  1. [...] Matt of FPS Rantings gunned his way through FEAR: Extraction Point and compares his impressions of the sequel to the original release. After commenting on the demo earlier and having the following to say about some of the new weaponry, see if his initial excitement held up and discuss your own experience with this haunting run’n’gunner. I believed I giggled when I picked up the minigun. Then I pulled the trigger. Pure. Unadulturated. Joy. [...]
