Roger Federer will not be competing in the Japan Open or the Shanghai Masters next month. He issued the following statement: “I am disappointed that I have to withdraw from Tokyo and Shanghai, as they are two of my favorite cities in the world and the fans have been great to me over the years. After consultation with my team and doctors, I decided to take the difficult decision to withdraw from both tournaments so that I can give my body a chance to rest, rehabilitate and fully recover from a physically challenging year.”
He hasn’t mentioned whether he will compete in the Swiss Indoors in his hometown (Basel) on November 2, 2009 but his website still has it listed so, for now, I guess we can assume he’s planning to be back on the court by then.
Honestly, I think it’s great that he’s taking some time off. He is the top-ranked player right now. He beat Pete Sampras’ record by capturing his 15th career Grand Slam title. Of course, he also became a first-time father after his wife, Mirka, gave birth to twin girls this past July.
Rest up, Roger! You deserve to take a break and enjoy some family time!
