Finally, I’ll Rant

Mom always told me to wait until I settle down before I talk about something particularly upsetting. Plus, my internet is crashing more than Ben Roethlisberger nowadays. Either way, I’m finally going to talk about the BCS.
Firstly, let me get this simple fact out of the way. Michigan is clearly a better team than Florida. Losing to Ohio State by three is much more impressive than losing to Auburn by ten. Losing to Ohio State by three is more impressive than beating Arkansas by ten. Losing to Ohio State by three is more impressive than beating LSU by thirteen. In case you forgot — since they haven’t played in weeks — Ohio State is a damn good football team. And in case you don’t have a gambling problem and were unaware, home field advantage accounts for, on average, three points. That’s in the NFL. In college football, home field is much more of an advantage. Especially if your grass appears to be attached to the ground by nothing more than scotch tape. In the world of sane, rational over-thinkers with clear biases, Michigan won that game.
(Of course they didn’t win in the real world, but I’m still pretty pissed about it. Let me have this moral victory of circular logic.)
There’s an answer to every “reason” that Florida is in the National Championship game. It’s clear, they shouldn’t be. Congratulations world, you don’t have to watch the two best teams in college football play each other twice.
Be prepared, here comes the irony. The BCS is the system which most often crowns the best team as champion. Think about it for a second.
Florida basketball lost to South Carolina in their only two match-ups last year. South Carolina won the NIT tournament, Florida won the NCAA. Which team was better? Head-to-head says South Carolina was a better team than the National Champion. It’s definitely debatable. There is no way Pittsburgh was the best team in the NFL last year, but they have the Lombardi Trophy. The 2006 version of the St. Louis Cardinals were the worst version of the Cards in recent memory and were probably the worst team in the playoffs. They certainly weren’t the best despite their season-end champagne showers. The NBA playoffs don’t count until they stop calling fouls on players in a five-foot radius of Dwyane Wade. Deciding it on the field/court/ice rarely crowns the best team, just the hottest.
So, when Ohio State destroys Florida in a little over a month from now, the best team in college football will be college footballs national champion, which is really all you can ask for from a post-season. And don’t feel too bad for Michigan and their royal screwjobbing: as Lucille Bluth once (sorta) said, “I’d rather be playing in a meaningless bowl in California than for the national championship in Arizona.”

I blame society. go gators!
