US Baseball Team

From Guest Blogger, Tony Baldwin of b5media’s “Inside the Ballpark“:

I’m sure the first thought that went into your head when you saw the roster for the United States of America Olympic baseball team was something like, “who are these guys?” Well – in order to help you out, here’s five things you should know about the U.S. baseball team.

1. Most countries are sending their best players to the Olympics. That’s not true for the U.S., who is sending 24 players, all but one of whom is a minor leaguer. That last player? His name is Stephen Strasburg and he’s still in college at San Diego State University.

2. Matt LaPorta is probably the most recognizable name on this roster. LaPorta was the main piece that the Cleveland Indians got in return after shipping out C.C. Sabathia to the Milwaukee Brewers.

3. Olympic baseball can be seen on television this year. Here’s a great TV schedule that helps you out, so you don’t miss the U.S.

4. The stiffest competition for the U.S. will come from Cuba and Japan. The Japanese players are currently taking breaks from their professional league season in order to compete in the Olympics, something the Major League Baseball owners should consider some day.

5. Team member Brian Duensing is keeping a blog during the Olympics. I like how he signs his blog posts, so I will leave you with my signature.
