Focus on Raincity Studios

September 15, 2006 by Mark Evans

NewsForge (”the online newspaper for Linux and Open Source”) has a feature story about Vancouver-based Raincity Studios, a Drupal and Ruby development shop. Raincity comes across as a somewhat atypical operation. Robert Scales, its president, publishes the company’s finances on his blog even though it’s a privately-owned entity. As well, Raincity has a partnership model (four of the 11 full-time employees are partners). Scales also encourages his employees to write blogs and devote 30% of their time to community projects.

Shops like Unspace (Toronto) and silverorange (PEI) have incredibly flat models. 7 out of 10 employees at silverorange are partners, and every employee is paid the exact same amount.
