I agree that the economy doesn't HAVE to be based on debt spending, but ours is. A more reasonable consumer economy, that isn't as explosive in growth (but more stable over the long run), anchored in better financial decisions by individuals and acknowledgment that recessions will happen by our leaders, would be a better option. Periods of growth wouldn't be as dramatic -- but neither would downcycles.

A consumer economy doesn't have to based on debt fueled expenses. I have been watching some of the bail out packages with amusement because the government is effectively saying that they're helping companies out that have been bad with their money. The reality is if Chrysler was in the same situation 3 years ago it would have been allowed to fail and others would have taken their place in the market.

I hope the stimulus packages help shorten the recession but I think long term all of these stimulus and buyouts are going to have to be paid by someone (the poor taxpayer)

Unfortunately, that's a hard one to sell (even though you are right) when CEOs and government leaders are not responsible at all...

They were thinking that they could get rich on phenomenal growth at others' expense. And they did. Too bad such an unstable mode of growth is...unstable.
