Former President Comes Out to SMU Practice

Players at Southern Methodist got a surprise on Monday morning, according to reports, when head coach June Jones allowed a special person to join them at practice – former president George W. Bush. Bush, who has been working on a book and speaking in public since leaving the oval office, is not a SMU alumni, as he attended Yale and Harvard, but he is Methodist and has been invited to the campus a number of times.

Bush came onto the field wearing a team SMU hat and watched as the players practiced. He then talked to the team for about five minutes and shook hands with individual players. In addition to watching practice today, Bush will also take part in the Navy game at SMU on October 17 .

Whether or not you liked Bush as a president, you have to admit – it is pretty cool that he showed up at practice. Of course, it’s well know that he’s a sports fan (I believe he used to own a baseball team), so it’s no surprise that he wanted to check out a practice.
