Me too! I was looking to start my own business, but I thought maybe a UPS franchise would be another way to go. I think I will stay away from this "opportunity".

So happy, Mari, that you have been warned off. Yes! when single owners have multiple locations, they do spread their risk. But, of course, even a single owner of UPS stores who has spread the risk can come to the point that the spread doesn't save them from "unprofitability" and those stores teetering at breakeven can be in trouble in these times, and the owners will want to get rid of them and cut their losses.

By all means, don't even think of buying a franchise of any kind until you see the actual performance statistics, the P&L statements, the tax returns, etc... and try to actually work in any franchised business you would buy to see if there are "donated hours" of work by the owner(s) that don't show up in the business records.

Under law, franchisors can sell new franchises without disclosing unit performance statistics to new franchisees (this is a premeditated flaw in regulation) but when you buy an existing store, you don't have to buy unless they furnish you with their performance statistics and their business tax statements. Even then, have a CPA reconcile the figures, and LET THE BUYER BEWARE. Owners don't generally sell "profitable" stores!

I am so glad I found this site. We have been considering buying a Franchise in Missouri for the last year. I think what's deceiving is when a single owner has multiple locations and you get the impression that this is somehow a lucrative investment. Does anyone have performance stats on the stores in St. Louis, Missouri? I know the stores in Ballwin are doing very poorly!

I live in BC Canada and was looking into buying a UPS store. i notice at least 4 other UPS stores for sale and started to do some internet research. That is how I ended up here. After reading this post , it is quite obvious to me that UPS does not look after its people. I am not going to buy the UPS store. Thank you all for your input. You have likely saved me from a big mistake. Sorry about your losses and I wish you all the luck in the future.

Even if they never buy a thing, here are some good reasons to treat drop-off customers right.

Hi George!

As the wife and mother of those who thought the UPS Store Franchise would be, as promised, an "unprecedented" opportunity, they found out the hard way that it was just that ---an unprecendented opportunity to lose a lot of money, and a real American Nightmare.

As for Johnny's Lunch. Sean is the expert around here ---but in my research, I have found that businesses that have been around for a long time and then decide to franchise, may be trying to lay off their losers, minimize their risk, and protect their bottom lines.

I'm sure Sean will weigh in on this.

Has anyone heard of Johnny's Lunch? Why have the first two stores in Michigan closed? Are they going out of business as a corporation?
