The New England Patriots received some bad news on Thursday when it was revealed that Fred Taylor needed ankle surgery. To begin the 2009 NFL season, Taylor has been the Patriots best running back. New England didn’t put him on injured reserve, so there’s a chance that Taylor could return later in the season.

In the first four games of the season, Taylor had 45 rushes for 201 yards and two touchdowns. His best game of the season came in Week 3 when he ran for 105 yards and scored a touchdown.
With Taylor out of the picture, the Patriots have a number of players that could get carries at running back. Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis should all see more action. Maroney and Morris or the two most likely to see a big jump in action.
With a record of 3-1, the Patriots take on the undefeated Denver Broncos on Sunday.
