Freelance Writers – Get A Handle On Rejection!

December 4, 2005 by Anne Wayman

I doubt there’s a successful freelance writer out there who hasn’t gotten depressed, or at least discouraged by rejection. It’s a fact of life for freelancers. But the truly thriving freelancer has learned to recognize that rejection is far from the end of the world. Keep in mind:

  • It isn’t personal, no matter how it feels
  • Magazines and other publishers reject for all sorts of reasons, and you’ll rarely know why
  • Rejection often isn’t about your writing – it’s about what’s going on in the editor’s mind – what fits the publication, that’s all.

It’s my firm belief that every single rejection is a badge of courage. Post it on the wall, and celebrate, because by getting to rejection, you’ve already gone further than 90% of the folks out there who say they want to write. You’ve written, you’ve rewritten and polished, and you’ve dared to submit your work!

Give yourself a huge pat on the back and keep on writing. You’re way ahead of the pack.

Write well and often,

Anne Wayman, Freelance Writer
