Friday Alert: Switch from Analog to Digital

June 11, 2009 by Mark Ellis

On Friday, the long awaited end to analog television will be finalized. Television stations around the United States will cut their analog signals and their signals will only be available digitally.

The Federal Communications Commission, or FCC, is calling this a “historic transition”. Once the switch from analog to digital is completed, the FCC believes that television users will love the improved picture, better sound and the wider array of available channels. Additionally, the switch to digital will clear airwaves that will be valuable for wireless services.

While most people are prepared for the switch, the FCC gives you instructions on what to do if you experience any challenges.

Said Michael J. Copps of the FCC: “In any change this big, there are going to be disruptions. We are trying our best to provide people, especially those who are most at-risk, with the help they need to make the switch as smoothly as possible. And we’re going to keep offering it after June 12, so people should call us at 1-888-CALL-FCC.”

If you need a coupon for a digital converter box, you can get one at DTV2009.gov. According to the FCC, more than 30 million coupons have been redeemed so far.
