From time to time everyone makes mistakes. Happens to the best of us. Hopefully our mistakes don’t end up costing us $131,250 like they did Jim Furyk. As a rule, golfers are allowed 14 clubs in their bag during tournament play, a rule that Furyk and his caddy Fluff Cowan seemed to have forgotten at The Barclays. The club in question was a 60-degree wedge with extra bounce, a club he thought might be needed, but chose instead to go with his usual low bounce wedge. Because of his bag’s rain hood, both he and Cowan forgot to remove the extra club, a mistake they discovered on the 15th hole. The offense ended up costing Furyk four penalty strokes, but even worse than that, it dropped him from sixth to a tie for fifteenth, and cost him $131,250 in prize money.

The mistake took place in the third round of The Barclays this past weekend, and both Furyk and Cowan tried to put the error behind them. Furyk came back on Sunday with a 2-under 69, but by then the damage was done.
