Gannett, the biggest newspaper publisher in the United States, reportedly will layoff approximately 1,400 of its workers around the country. This isn’t the first time that Gannett has cut jobs and is unlikely to be the last time.
Due to increased competition from the internet and the overall economic downturn around the world, the newspaper industry has been extremely hard hit. A number of newspapers have folded and many more have had to massively readjust their compensation rates to try to keep their heads above water.
Among the newspapers expected to lose employees in this round of Gannett layoffs are the Arizona Republic, the Cincinnati Enquirer and the Des Moines Register. The Arizona Republic will reportedly cut 100 jobs, the Cincinnati Enquirer is expected to lose about the same amount and the Des Moines Register is to cut three dozen workers.
USA Today, Gannett’s largest newspaper operation, isn’t expected to cut any employees.
