Gilead Sciences, a biopharmaceutical company that specializes in therapeutics, has announced that they are shutting down their Colorado offices in the cities of Boulder and Westminster. Due to this move, more than 60 employees are expected to be laid off prior to the beginning of 2010.
While there are nearly 139 workers in the Colorado offices in the two cities, approximately half of the workers were offered a chance to relocate to another office in the state of California. Coming in 2009, Gilead Sciences had nearly 3,000 employees around the globe.
According to the Daily Camera, a Gilead Sciences spokesman blamed these job losses on the recent acquisition of CV Therapeutics. The transaction, which went down earlier in 2009, was valued at $1.4 billion.
Gilead Sciences is mostly known for their treatments of HIV, the flu and hepatitis B. In recent years, the company has started to branch out into other areas including respiratory and cardiovascular therapeutics.
