Gisele Bündchen loves the dollar, really

Dollar menu

Maybe Tony Romo got tired of her borrowing a dollar for the tip jar in Starbucks, or maybe she just realized that the U.S. is a big market to alienate, but now Gisele Bündchen claims she really does love dollars – along with euros, pound sterling, reals … you get the idea. Sadly, none of that changes the fact that any real recovery of the dollar looks quite distant. You know it’s bad when a MacDonald’s ad for the popular “dollar menu” pokes fun at the weak dollar. For those of you who don’t know, the dollar menu is an entire meal – burger, fries, and a drink – for only one dollar. You can imagine how healthy that is. Well, trust me when I say this, but normally the average U.S. citizen is as aware of the exchange rate as they are of the circumference of Mars (for those who want to know, 227,936,640 km or 141,633,260 miles).

The weak dollar has had one interesting effect, though, which is to bring a host of otherwise domestic businesses from the US kicking and screaming into the international market. I’m talking about internet-based businesses, who suddenly find themselves with a lot of orders from people in countries they’ve never heard of eager to cash in on the weak greenback. In that sense the weak dollar may be a good thing, if it inspires clever entrepreneurs to internationalize their businesses to leverage markets outside of the U.S.
