Give The Undrafted A Break

September 13, 2008 by Kevin Hunter

Today reports have former USC and undrafted forward Davon Jefferson signing with the Maccabi Haifa Heat of the Israeli Premier League.

Jefferson was only a freshman when he declared for the draft. He averaged 12.1 points a game for the Trojans last season.

I know that the rules give players a certain date to withdraw from the NBA Draft and not hire an agent to keep their college eligibility.

But in cases such as Jefferson, who was just a freshman and was not drafted, shouldn’t the NCAA insert another rule that somehow allows them to come back to school and play? Maybe they can sit out a year before returning to the team.

It just seems like a waste to have players like Jefferson not be able to go back and play college basketball after not being drafted.

  1. Wait, didn’t that morris guy on kentucky do this? I think he entered the draft, didn’t sign an agent, went undrafted, and then played one more season at kentucky.
    I think.
    I could be wrong.
