Give Them A Reason To Hire You

You know, so many people are looking for a job. Filling out applications, sending resumes and cover letters and hoping to get a job. Over the last few weeks I have met with job seekers or spoken to job seekers who are frustrated with the difficulty they are experiencing with trying to find employment.

The first challenge that I see for many job seekers is getting the phone to ring. The phone indicatesjob-offer interest and if no one is calling, and you are actively pursuing jobs, than something has to change.

The second challenge is that many job seekers are sitting behind their computer pushing out resumes, filling out online applications and hoping that will net them interviews. But that is not working.

The third challenge job seekers seem to be facing is the war within. Many people are teetering between frustration and anger. Neither emotion will assist job seekers with finding a job.

In order to find a job in this crazy market, you have to give organizations a reason to hire you. As a job seeker you are a commodity. A commodity is useful and valuable. But if you can’t sell yourself on paper, the phone won’t ring. If you believe that the only way to find a job is to churn out resumes online, you are sorely mistaken. And ATTITUDE is everything in this market. People won’t hire angry or frustrated people – at least not knowingly. So get your head in the game and give hiring managers a reason to hire you. How do you do that?

Create value! You are the value proposition. You are the commodity that will add value to the organization.

Getting the phone to ring is connected to how you get your resume in front of hiring managers! Your attitude will impact how well you connect with people. You have to get out and talk to people. Get yourself to networking functions, talk to people in the coffee shop, the grocery store, the bank, the gas station, your family reunion, or church. Pick a place. Any place will do. You are not going to get your phone to ring if you are dealing with anger or frustration and the phone will definitely not ring sitting behind your computer. The key to your success comes down to getting in front of key decision makers and once you are there, giving them a reason to hire YOU!

Your ability to create value when discussing your skills and abilities will be the difference between you and other candidates competing for the same job. Do you know who you are and what you bring to an organization? Can you articulate your value? What are the issues facing the organizations you speak to and how can you solve their problems? When you can answer these questions, you will just be at the starting gate for helping hiring managers decide to hire you.
