Do you run a Bakery?
Pies and cakes and bread fresh from the oven….mmmm. Sadly, small bakeries everywhere are closing because chain grocery stores are including bakeries, which many people find more convenient. I’m a fan of one-stop shopping, but I also like to support small businesses as well. If you own a bakery, here are some ways in which you can go green:
Bakery Go-Green Tips:
- Buy organic baking products whenever possible. It might be a little more expensive, but your final products will be much healthier (if you can call cake healthy!). Try starting with just organic flour. You can find organic flour in large quantities at the following sites:
- Fairhaven Organic Flour Mill: http://www.fairhavenflour.com/
- Bob’s Red Mill: http://www.bobsredmill.com/index.php
- Eden Organic: http://www.edenfoods.com/
- Create a compost pile. Any food product that you would normally throw away can be made into compost. This includes egg shells, spoiled food, and coffee grounds. Don’t have your own garden? I’m sure you can find a neighbor or customer who would love to take it off your hands. You can find more information about composting here.
- Choose natural aprons and chef coats. You can find a ton of green clothing options at these places:
- Kushtush: http://www.kushtush.com/homaprons.htm
- Rawganique: http://www.rawganique.com/kitchenaprons.htm
- ApronStore: http://www.apronstore.com/hempaprons.htm
Are you a bakery owner? If so, what are you doing to go green with your small business? Leave a comment!
