Going Green in a New Economy

The dumpy economy right now doesn’t mean that your business has to give up on going green. In fact, the inauguration of Barack Obama has proven to be a good thing in the world of environmentally-friendly products, as his support gets people talking about it again. However, as Environmental Leader and other sources report, we’re going to have to rethink our marketing strategies.

In the past, going green was about saving the world. And it still is. However, today’s consumer is more inclined to say, “I’ll save the world after I make sure I can afford to put food on the table this month.” In other words, while past green products did well even thought they were often slightly more expensive, your customers may now shy away from going green if it will be more expensive.

As any business-minded marketer will tell you, though, it is all about how you present ideas.

Instead of saving the world with your energy efficient product, talk instead about how you can be saving the bank account. Luckily, going green and saving money usually go hand in hand. Even if consumers have to shell out extra money at first, they recognize the benefits of buying light bulbs that will save money over time or investing in cleaning products in concentrated forms so they save money AND packaging waste.

So keep doing what you’re doing. The world still wants to go green. You just have to change the message a little.

  1. Actually, I would say that now is the BEST time to seize the opportunity to “Go Green.” There are several little ways to start the process even if you can’t make large-scale changes at this time.
