Google Maps for Mobile Adds “My Location”

iPhone MapGoogle is announcing a new feature within Google Maps for Mobile that allows for GPS-like positioning, “My Location”. This means those of us without GPS-enabled phones can use this feature.

The positioning works by triangulating your position using nearby cell phone towers, in the same way Navizon, which has an app ported to the iPhone, currently works.

Now, don’t expect it to be totally accurate. Google says it will be accurate down to about 10 city blocks. I can testify to this with Navizon. I have their app installed on my iPhone, and it does get close, just not close enough for my satisfaction. Still a very cool technology though, and one I would like to see further developed.

There’s a catch though. The iPhone does use Google Maps for Mobile although the current version does not yet support an upgrade to the new beta version which includes the My Location feature. Although do expect it to be added as Apple adds new features to the phone in new firmware versions.

Do you think you will have any uses for the My Location feature? Be sure to watch the YouTube video (link below) for more info.
