Google Reader Hacks for Time Effectiveness (Part 2)
Before reading check out part 1: Google Reader Hacks for Time Effectiveness
- Learn even more shortcuts. Yesterday’s condensed list of shortcuts was far from complete. Here’s even more shortcuts you can use to help you on Google Reader:
- n/p – Scan up/down
- enter – open/close item
- v – opens item source (great for incomplete feeds)
- 1/2 – expanded/list view
- gs – go to starred items
- Limit your time. If you do not determine a set time limit for reading your limits you will find yourself spending hours upon hours reading you feeds. If you set yourself a 1 hour time limit every day you will nearly instantly increase your effectiveness as you focus on the best of your feeds.
- Don’t jump to subscribing. Although not specifically for Google Reader, do not immediately subscribe to a websites feed if you find one post you like. A better process to to create a bookmark folder for websites to recheck and look through for a few minutes and if after this inspection the site still holds its value then you should subscribe to its feed.
- Reader bookmarks. Unknown to me until this week Google Reader also offers a bookmark you can use to instantly be transported to your next feed item while marking them as read at the same time. Think of it like a limited stumble upon where you are taken to another website with the click of a button but the sites you visit are from your feeds.
- Take your feeds on the road. Google offers a mobile reader product available at http://google.com/reader/m. Going on vacation? Instead of letting your items pile up skim and star the best while your out of the office.
