I would say everything an entry-level user of Excel would need, could be done via Google Spreadsheets.
I just don’t think it’s going to replace Excel. I can’t imagine anyone needing spreadsheets thinking, “Eh! I’ll just go online anytime I need to work on my spreadsheet.”
Robert Scoble has some good comments about this being good for Microsoft (competition in the market improves the software to the end-user) and that middleware will eventually be the key. I’m just not so sure an additional layer will enable the mass of users to be large enough to really impact or change Microsoft’s Excel strategy dramatically.
