Google, Sun Partnership Rundown
Google and Sun reached a strategic agreement to promote the Java technology and Google’s toolbar.
From Sun’s press release:
Under the agreement, Sun will include the Google Toolbar as an option in its consumer downloads of the Java Runtime Environment on http://java.com. In addition, the companies have agreed to explore opportunities to promote and enhance Sun technologies, like the Java Runtime Environment and the OpenOffice.org productivity suite available at http://www.openoffice.org.
First hint about the possible partnership was given by on Sun’s President Jonathan Schwartz’s blog entry posted on Saturday.
More news reports yesterday mentioned that this was going to be ‘Google Office’ and a huge slap to Microsoft. Others claimed that Google and Sun have been working together, exchanging forces for a while anyways.
Lastly, came the press conference which put an end to the speculations.
The results? I am not sure what affect this is going to be for the Google toolbar. Most folks download Google’s toolbar before even knowing what Java is. On the other hand, the new Open Office release looks pretty good and such partnership can can push this package and make it more mainstream.
