Grammatical Dysfunction: Count the Yahoo Buzzwords

December 6, 2006 by Eric Eggertson

“Yahoo! Re-Aligns Organization to More Effectively Focus on Key Customer Segments and Capture Future Growth Opportunities.”

Excited about Yahoo’s decision to “leverage its significant strengths” to “deliver the most possible value to our key customers”?

You can catch every technology and business buzzword in the news release.

Update: Dan Foremski and Om Malik decode the text of this major announcement from Yahoo, and the meaning behind its release late in the day. CEO Terry Semel gives a more plain language version of the changes on the Yahoo blog, which acknowledges that this will be perceived as possible punishment for a leaked memo by one of the departing executives.

  1. David Jones says:

Whoever has Yahoo! as a client should show them this post. :)

  2. DIGSox says:

All of the buzzwords remind me of the Buzzword Blends (http://buzzwordblends.babson.edu)

  3. DIGSox – great link. I’ll have to include that in a posting next time I hammer away at this, one of my favourite themes.

David – That news release was the focus of hundreds and hundreds of blog postings, and more than a few of the authors refered cynically to the language. I think the message was received loud and clear at Yahoo. Whether they use clearer language in the future is yet to be seen.
