Great Blog Off Tip #18: Learn to Recognize Bad Advice, and Walk Away From It

I used to work with a woman who thought she knew EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING and always wanted to have people do stuff her way. Her intentions were good, but man, I just wanted to smack her sometimes! No, I never did, but man, it was REALLY annoying.

The thing that got me was that she would give a lot of well-intentioned advice that was completely off base, and then would seem offended when I didn’t follow what she suggested. Eventually, she stopped suggesting things (thank goodness). But I started to think about what would have happened if I had listened to her horrible advice. And then I found this video, which is admittedly satirical but includes some life lessons, too:

This goes back to learning how to say no, and both of those things come down to setting boundaries. Without boundaries, you may find that you feel frustrated, powerless, and taken advantage of. Don’t say yes to requests or follow bad advice just to avoid hurting someone else’s feelings. Trust your gut.

What’s the worst advice you actually followed? Leave a comment.

  1. The worst advice I got when I was in Corporate America was when my I let several colleagues in my department convince me to apply for a promotion because I was the best qualified—but I wasn’t the BEST LOOKING. I was resentful right up until the day I left.

The worst advice I ever got on a personal level was listening to my lustful mind and marrying a man who because a nightmare on Elizabeth Avenue!

I love your blog and I’m glad I found it!
