Great Blog Off Tip #4: Open Your Mail As Soon As You Receive It

If you’re anything like me, you toss the mail on your desk or the counter every day and then kind of forget about it for a few days. Well, that’s how I used to be, anyway. Now, I open my mail every day as soon as I get to my desk. I like this because it (a) keeps things from piling up and (b) makes sure I don’t miss important dates like bill payments or RSVPs.
I used to look at opening mail as a chore because it took for-ev-er, but now that I’m on top of it, it goes fast and it’s a nice break in my day.
Are you an every day kind of mail opener? A weekly opener? Something else? Leave a comment.

Good tip, Kristen!! I open the mail everyday and *immediately* trash or shred the junk mail. Us freelancers never know when there could be a check in there. ;)
But I have found it’s more effective for me to file (receipts, mail, etc.) once every two weeks. I don’t know why this is so, but it seems to take the same amount of time to file a small stack as a large stack, so I do that every other weekend.
Dawn, I use a similar system. I open the mail every day and trash or shred the stuff I don’t need, and then I have two file boxes on my desk: One for stuff to file and one for stuff to do something about (eg, send a check, fill out and return, etc). I file my current work items immediately because those folders are in my desk drawers, but the stuff that requires getting up and walking to the other side of the room gets handled on a weekly basis, give or take. :)

Yes, I’m a “right now” sort of mail opener person. It’s my routine – break for lunch, walk to the mail box, stand by the recycling bin as I open and “file” the mail. It’s so much easier to deal with it immediately than try to find it later.
