Great Writing Habits for Writers

My dad used to rumble at me, the chains of habits are too small to be noticed until they’re too strong to be broken. I have no idea where he got this quote but I was reminded of it today when I read John Hewitt’s post at The Five Habits of Successful Freelancers.
As I read through his Five Habits I was struck by how much of successful freelance writing really is, at least in part, a matter of habit.
To his five, I’d add a sixth:
Successful Freelancers Are Disciplined Writers
If I don’t write regularly, which has become a habit, the writing just doesn’t get done. Setting up a writing schedule and mostly sticking to it has meant the difference between making a good living as a writer and wishing I could. Which is why I say:
Write well and often,

Writing regularly is key to staying on your game. I’ve found that if, I don’t have any projects to work on and I spend a few days away from the keyboard, then it’s much tougher to get back in the groove.
So trying to do some writing everyday is vital to keeping yourself sharp.
