GroundedFitness Declaration of Independence

July 22, 2008 by Kelly Turner

When in the course of human events, it becomes neccessary for one people to dissolve that freaking urge to weigh yourself every 5 minutes, it become neccessary to huck your scale out the window.

We hold these truths to be self evident, that all woman are created with a little junk in thier trunk, and celulite, and are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are to not count calories, to not fit into a size 0, and the persuit of happiness through the occassional doughnut.

We, therefore, the women of the world, both skinny and fat, gym rats and non, mothers, daughters, wives and friends, do, in the name, and by the authority of the good Author and Readers of GroundedFitness, solemnly publish and declare that these Bodies, are, and of the Right, ought to be Free and Independent Bodies, that they are absolved of all Allegience to The Scale, in digital and dial form.

And that these Free and Independent Bodies, they have the full power to eat ice cream for dinner, skip a workout, or wear sweat pants when they so choose, without guilt.

And for the support of this declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of living a mostly Healthy Lifestyle, we mutually pledge to eachother our Self Confidence, our Self Respect, and our sacred Peace Of Mind.

The declare your independence from the scale, leave your John Hancock.

    eating bender

    P.S. Great idea!

  2. Rae says:

I’m currently in recovery for an eating disorder and this is the one step I CANNOT take!

So here I go…. No more scale for me, I promise. Should I weigh in weekly to ensure I’m doing ‘ok’ or should I just… live?

  3. Yes, yes, YES!

Both Jenn and Erin, the Fit Bottomed Girls, sign this enthusiastically.

(Erin is flying in an airplane over Mexico at the moment, but I know for a fact she’d be down for this.)

  4. charlotte says:

    Amen to all that!

PS> In full disclosure, I must admit that I still have my scale. But I WANT to chuck it so, you know, at least I know have a problem:)

  5. Alex says:

    Yes! Count me in.

Life is too short to let daily fluctuations control how you feel about yourself. If you feel that you’re healthy, that’s enough to be happy about.

  6. Kelly Turner says:

Rae- of course you should do what your recovery “voice’ tells yo uto do- anything that will keep you healthy. My counselor told me to weigh in everyone ince i na while to make sure i wasnt losing, but i truely felt better just by judging how my clothes felt. if they started to get a little tight or a little loose, i knew i needed to start paying closer attention, but other than that- i was free! i think its better to focus on how you feel that numbers, but it took me a while to get to that point. sdont do it before you are ready, but also dont hang on too long or you;ll miss out on your life.

FBG Jenn- Erin is not allowed to sign because she is currently on vacation, ie: i hate her guts and havent been on vacation in years. maybe when she gets back and appologizes.

charlotte- as long as you dont let it control you, and the number to dictate what kind of a day you are having ill allow a signature ;)

Alex- amen! couldnt have said it better myself.

  7. Maggie says:

For me the scale doesn’t rule my life. But I do heart my scale. It keeps me on track. Because certain types of clothes fit differently on me. The same size clothes depending how they’re made could fit tighter or looser. I agree that we shouldn’t live or feel that a number dictates how we feel about ourselves. So I’m all for living a happy life but the scale stays. ha

  8. Kelly Turner says:

you can keep your scale, just be independent from it. we didnt burn England to the ground when we left. we even go back and visit England every once in a while just to say hi.

we did steal David Beckham, though, and that means WE WIN!

  9. JenP says:

    I killed mine with a hammer. :)

  10. Zandria says:

Amen! I rarely get on the scale anymore anyway, for exactly this reason. :)

  11. T says:

i rarely get on ours so i’ll “sign” away! i can’t huck the scale though – still live at home and it’s my mom’s. she might hurt me if i destroy it.

  12. Stands and pledges allegience to all put the throwing the scale part out. But I only weigh myself once a week. (I used to be a multiple times a day weigher, so I think this is major progress!)

    I am on board!!!

  15. Sagan says:

Amen! This is exactly what I needed.

I think I might have to print this out and tape it to my mirror.

  16. MizFit says:

    weighing in.

declared about 16 years ago and havent looked back once.

  17. karen says:

Love everything you said, totally agree, but can’t part with my scale, yet.

Then again, I probably weigh myself just once a month. Interesting because today was the day.

  18. Colleen says:

I don’t own a scale, but I’ve stopped to look at them a few times in the store – I’m so glad I didn’t succumb! The only time I get weighed is when I have my yearly checkup!
