Grow Your Freelance Business With Social Media Marketing

Are you skeptical of social media and how it can help you grow your freelance business?

If so, you’re not alone. But you might want to explore the possibilities—especially given the current economy. Social media can help you find new markets, reach more potential clients, and help get your name out in front of more people. And why wouldn’t you want to extend your reach right now?

I talk at length about the benefits of social media marketing in a recent interview that I did with Heather Boerner, a San Francisco-based freelance writer and consultant, for her blog, Serenity for the Self-Employed. She asked me a number of questions about social media marketing and how to use it to grow your freelance business. And while I’ve touched on social media several times on The Golden Pencil, my interview with Heather is a much more in-depth look at the subject.

So how have you used social media marketing to grow your freelance business? Drop me a line—I’d love to hear about it!

Just being AWARE of social marketing–and subscribing to e-newsletters that cover it–allowed me to snag a new freelance assignment with a magazine. All I did was forward a link to a story I’d read to my editor, typed one or two lines on how we could apply this same social-marketing concept to a story for her audience, and, BAM, I got the assignment. I think social marketing and social networking is still so new for so many people that just knowing what it is and how it works (even on a small scale) can still give you a leg up.

    Thanks for dropping by Leah.

I agree. Social media marketing is where things are headed. So if you have any knowledge of these tools, it’s a real asset to potential clients and publications.

It’s so important for all kinds of reasons – getting clients, getting help if you need a writer to help bail you out of a tight spot (that’s happened to me), and generating support…. that’s only a short list. I love being part of the social networks like twitter and facebook. Those are the two I use the most right now.

Thanks for the advice. I am new to freelance writing. Check out my new blog. I have listed some sites I have found to make money writing on the internet. Please feel free to leave any comments.
