The two option you have are the online version which is available when you log into your Gmail account (Google’s email servie). Or your can download the desktop version and access Gtalk without having to log into your Gmail.

To help you understand the difference, I thought it would be good to share with you some of the capabilities of each version. See below:

  • Online version
    • Integrated into your Gmail account so that you can access it at any time
    • Able to make yourself invisible which still being logged in
    • Change the number of Gtalk buddies that you can see all at once
    • Video conference
    • Talk via VoIP
    • And many more options
  • Desktop
    • Integrated into your Gmail account so that you can access it at any time
    • Change the number of Gtalk buddies that you can see all at once
    • Video conference
    • Talk via VoIP
    • And many more options

Another thing is that Gtalk has been integrated into multi-client instant message software program. A multi-client program basically allows you to communicate via different instant messaging services such as Gtalk or Skype or Yahoo. Below is a screenshot of the different multi-clients and what options you have available for Gtalk.
