Gina,

I appreciate your views, but I have no need to continue this circular conversation. You do not have to like my sources. I don't have to evaluate information the way that you do. As a Christian like many other religions I have strong opinions and beliefs about what I believe. I don't agree that the World Religion class example you give is a valid point for my sourcing. Sourcing as a writer is a choice. Feel free to use whatever resources you want for the things you write and allow me the same liberty to do the same for my writing and what I share. We will not agree and that is ok for me. I have no desire to convince you of anything when it comes to my beliefs, standards and choices. You are welcome to share whatever information you would like on this topic. But evaluating my choice of source is a waste time. I get to choose and that is the beauty of writing/blogging.

Darlene - aren't these Christian publications?

To put things into context, if somebody were trying to explain Christianity to a Muslim, would you think that providing them literature that was written by a Muslim writing about Christiantity would be the right thing to do, or would the person get a better characterization of the relgion and its holidays by providing them something that was written by Christians?

Religions are notorious for distorting the truths of other relgions, sort of like politicians distort their opponents' stance on issues and qualifications for the job. For that reason, I think it's really dangerous to develop opinions (especially negative inflammatory ones) based on history as written by some other religion that has an agenda.

I was once in a World Religions class where the professor told the entire class that the Prophet Muhammed had "over 9000 wives" and when I questioned her on it, she cited some things that she'd learned at her Christian church over the years, and brought in a history book that said he had "many wives." I tried to explain to her that, the Islmaic literature (the people who ACTUALLY practice it) says he either had 7, or 9 but never 9000 and that she ought to teach the students about these religions from the perspective of the people who practice it, but of course she wouldn't hear of it. As a result, she gave an entire class inaccurate information and now that they've had a "World Religions" class, they'll likely go around talking about it as if they are experts, all while spreading inaccurate information. Sad.

Darlene - this post really tickled me. My guy is taking a World History class right now and he'd just told me all the stuff he'd been reading about Celtics and Druids. The actual history is quite different than what you portray here.

One problem I have with Christianity (I'm Christian and was born and raised Baptist, by the way) is that it often distorts the history of other religions and demeans it's participants in an effort to elevate itself.

While I do not celebrate Halloween either, I wholeheartedly disagree with your characterization of the Celtics and I'd love to see your source for this post.
