Hampshire off to good start in C&G trophy

Hampshire enjoyed a convincing win over Ireland on the opening day of the C&G trophy. In one of the few matches that wasn’t affected by rain, Hampshire’s batsmen polished off the required 200 with just a wicket down. Earlier, the bowling had been a little rusty and the fielding sloppy, but they’ll be buoyed by a good start to their campaign. There was an interesting interval chat with Rod Bransgrove, who was obviously still chewing wasps over the test match venue allocations. He again hinted that it was a personal thing, and whether his departure from the club would improve things for Hampshire cricket.

Elsewhere, Middlesex had a complete shocker, getting bowled out for under a hundred by Gloucestershire, Worcestershire overcame Nottinghamshire and Marcus Trescothick found some good form, posting a match-winning 158 for Somerset in their C&G match against Kent. This will be good news for the England camp, who will be hoping he’s fit for the Sri Lanka test campaign that gets under way next month.

In International cricket, Australia took the first of the one day matches against Bangladesh, Adam Gilchrist helping get the 196 required for the win. England captain will get an insight into Australian cricket, as recent hero Jason Gillespie decides to spend the summer with Yorkshire.
