Hawaii’s Greg McMackin Uses Slur

Earlier today, Hawaii’s Greg McMackin fumbled over some words at the Western Athletic Conference media day, asking the media not to report on something he said. The comment in question? When talking about the Notre Dame and Hawaii banquet before the Hawaii Bowl last year, the coach said that the Irish performed a “little f****t dance” for the Warriors before they performed a traditional Hawaiian greeting dance called a shaka.

Ouch.

McMackin later talked to the media about the statement, saying,

“I want to officially, officially apologize. Please don’t write that statement I said as far as Notre Dame. The reason is, I don’t care about Notre Dame. But I’m not a … I don’t want to come out and have every homosexual ticked off at me. You know what I mean. Because I don’t have any problem with homosexuals. But I apologize for saying that and I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t run that word.”

Fat chance, the reports are all over the place.

So my question for you all: Obviously, what the coach said was derogatory and wrong…but should the reporters have respected his wishes and kept the comment under wraps?

Aw. Everybody’s so sensitive these days. The coach was just being a man.
PC is making this country weak as hell. Why don’t we just come out and say all of them and get this meaningless b.s. over with. Pretty soon, every public figure will have to not say anything to avoid offending someone. What’s next?
Criminals will get offended for us calling them thieves and murderers and child molesters. Maybe they’ll form a union and sue the rest of us. That’s why the rest of the world laughs at America. We’ve reached our zenith and our nadir. Bring on the decline. Just like Rome. Enuf Sed.

Yeah. And people like MikeH will probably get all upset because someone calls him “an ignorant shithead” or a “pathetic, bigoted loser”.

See, there’s no harm in what you say to people, it’s all their fault if they react.

      You inbred redneck tool.

      • JeffE says:

That was a personal attack, robert. that wasn’t too fair. or nice.

        • robert says:

That’s the point, Jeff. It’s not nice. And just because you demonize a group that’s been traditionally an open target doesn’t mean it doesn’t feel just as personal to them. I’ve got a ton of gay friends and when people like MikeH equate being gay with being murderers and child molestors, that’s a personal attack on my friends.

I thought he might need to get a glimpse of what it feels like.

          Get it now?

I had to reread what you wrote several times, and actually laughed out loud.

How can you compare Criminals to homosexuals? How do you compare gays to pedophiles? If homosexuals were evil, and hurt people the way pedophiles and murderers did, you would have a point. But they don’t. What makes you think that the word f@ggot is just another word for homosexual? It’s not about being politically correct. It’s about not using pejoratives.

  2. Dan Mackey says:

Has anyone ever considered that apparently the only group of people it IS okay to call names, make fun of, say terrible things about, are white southerners? Think about Mike’s comment above, calling someone an inbred redneck. He saw no problem with that. I doubt Mike would EVER have used the N word, had he wanted to make the point to a black man, because that would be too offensive.

I see black comedians talk in southern drawls all the time, making fun of white people. How often do you see white comedians do the same with black urban accents?

People make jokes constantly about hillbillys, rednecks, and other groups commonly associated with white southerners, and not one person stands up and screams about it, in the way that blacks, hispanics, gays, etc., stand up and scream about every perceived slight.

And please don’t say that it’s ok to make fun of whites since the ones doing it have been so downtrodden. Prejudice, stereotyping, making fun of someone, is never ok.

Just something to think about, the next time you make a reference to an “inbred redneck”.

I was the one who made the “inbred redneck” comment, and that was the point — that it’s offensive. I was trying to find one that might touch the person who posted the original comment’s personal sensitivities to make clear what I was saying. I have no idea who MikeH really is — for all I know, he might be black and gay and a woman.

However, on the larger subject, of COURSE it’s more all right to make fun of white males than anyone else. Because for centuries in the west, the white males have been in charge. They have had an automatic assumption of superiority, and for all that time they have been able to make light of everyone else as inferiors. They are a target that can stand a little ribbing. That doesn’t mean it’s alright to call ANYONE an “inbred redneck”. It’s not nice. That was the point.

I’m a father. (I’m also a white male.) In commercials, fathers are usually the butt of the joke — mothers and kids are much smarter. Hell, on Family Guy even the dog is much smarter. That’s the price I pay for the unquestioned hundreds of years when fathers got to treat their women and children like property. It’s not really a big deal, though.

C’mon, white males. Get over yourself.
