Health Quick-Tips: Cardio And Bodybuilding

April 3, 2008 by Scott Wharton

If you’re working out, trying to put on muscle and burn fat at the same time, too much cardio can be counter-productive. Too much cardio when working out in an effort to build muscle  can actually “burn” muscle as well as fat.

Solution: Do your cardio after your muscle building workout , but do short, high intensity cardio such as wind sprints and keep it to a minimal. This lets your body burn off fat for energy as opposed to muscle. Don’t forget your protien intake, as it is very important for muscle growth.

Where is your data to support claim?

These are “Quick” health tips, Brad. If you like you can read about it in Men’s Health, Muscle and Fitness or just about anywhere online will tell you the same thing.

Look, if you actually did research you will find that Scotts quick tip is common knowledge. This doesn’t mean its not helpful. For new people starting out its a good tip, why knock him for helping? If you spent the time to look for data to support his claim Brad, you will find it. It is easy to critisize, than help others guys – maybe you should take a leaf out of Scotts book?

I am a physician with a masters in stats and epidemiology. I also have years of exercise training under my belt. It does not make me all knowing, but I know a thing or two. Mens Health is not definitive source and not where you go for answers. That is not science. Anyway, I dont want to rain on your parade, you need to do what works for you. Sorry about the post and enjoy your work outs.

Thanks for replying Brad. I understand what you are saying, it wasn’t intended to offend you. I agree with you, Men’s Health isn’t a definitive source, and not where you go for answers, but it’s ok for a general view. I have a good knowledge of this field also, with a sports and exercise degree and am also a personal trainer, but I don’t know everything either, there is always things to learn!! Enjoy your workouts too mate, best of luck. Apologies again – I wasn’t having a go at you.
