Heart felt loyalty: Management by Quotation

“You can buy a person’s hands, but you can’t buy his heart. His heart is where his enthusiasm, his loyalty is.” – Stephen Covey
I love this quote! The more loyal my team is, the harder they work. The more loyal I am, the harder I work too.
I wear my heart on my sleeve, but not everyone else does.
I’m curious what you think…How do you find out where your direct report’s heart is?

Completely agree with this comment … I’ve found the more you interact with people at the “heart” level, the more loyal and harder working they are. It’s about mutual trust and respect … if either of these are missing motivation and enthusiasm for the job soon wane.
Phil,
It is good to get to the heart of the matter. The french work for heart coeur – hints at the courage in the heart. I think trust and safety with you helps people have heart to heart talks at work.

The ‘heart’ of the matter is honesty. Leadership should be honest with the employees. Management (or leadership) can’t just say “trust me” and expect it to happen. Trust must be earned the old fashion way … One must be willing to work for it! Someone must step forward and openly give it and that starts with management!
Same thought, but my version is blunter. Yet I still find myself having to repeat it over and over for it to sink in…
If they join for money they’ll leave for money.
