Hellgate: Confusion
I’ve been sort of watching this game off and on ever since I saw a trailer for it over at Gametrailers. Obviously the trailer only shows a cinematic but it was enjoyable to watch if anything. Now that time has passed I took the chance to revist the game and see what in-game screenshots and footage was out. Before I pass out the link to the goods, there’s a little something with this game that’s different. It’s one of those weird hybrid games. FPS/RPG. Having watched a few of the movies I’ve seen both elements in play and it’s definately a role playing game first, shooter second. Atleast, from what I’ve seen. Sorta like Deus Ex. Though Hellgate: London seems to have a bit more action on it’s side rather than the espionage and person bribing that Deus Ex had. Hopefully that’ll be true.
Because I like shooting things.

Some of you might think that the RPG elements might turn me off to the game. And you’d be wrong. I tend to enjoy RPGs to some degree. They last longer and generally have a good rich storyline. While I can generally beat an FPS game within a day (a few hours depending on some) RPGs can take several days, and that prolongs my fun. Yay! I tend to use RPGs as filler inbetween my FPS bouts. Hell, I even play MMORPGs. Those are nice because I can generally ignore everyone and do my own thing. If I’m in the mood to be “social” it’s easy enough to find a group to play with.
Anyhow, the confusion from these games seem to come in from where they want to put the focus. Role-playing or shooting (in this case zombies and demons) in the face. There is always going to be someone who didn’t like their choice and that’s understandable, personally I don’t mind either way so as long as they do it well. If you’re going to have 2 game type genres, mix them efficiently. Nothing is worse than playing a game that can’t do this right. One aspect of the game is good and the other one pisses you off because they half-assed it. This is inexcusable. I’m not saying they both have to be awesome and magnificent. All I want is for them to mesh well and to work together in a nice fashion. That way you’re playing a solid game and not two halves.
I’m rather looking forward to this game (with my luck it’ll suck horribly). It looks to be something a bit fresh and that’s something the gaming community could always use.
Rather than linking to the game’s website. I’ll just post this here instead. That way you’ll have quick access to screenshots, in-game footage, articles and whatever else. Why? Because I’m nice like that.
