Here’s a work tip for you … turn off to get things done

As many of you know I’ve been a pro blogger for over two years now. In my heyday I could crank out an obscene number of posts in a day. My record is something like 12 posts in an hour. Not so much any more. The pressures of being a part of b5media, Qumana, PodTech, and One By One Media take their toll. Oh, and I like to have a life too (I know strange, eh?). Today, though, I learned something. I realized that the way for me to get back in the rhythm of blogging is to turn off.
I woke up to no power at home this morning. This, unfortunately, has been a regular occurrence of late (we’ve been hit with three major winter storms recently). I decided (rather Lorraine suggested) to head to Victoria in search of power and WiFi (I have found both at a little coffee place, so I shan’t dawdle long here). On the 40 min ferry ride over I cranked out like 4 posts. Not bad considering I wasn’t even connected to the Net (I had left IE open last night when I hibernated so I could still get to the URLs and skim the open pages).
No e-mail pinging (I use a sonar ping as my e-mail alert), no IM, no phone. Just Qumana, IE, and writing. Okay the ride was a tad rough, but I’m pretty used to that.
I think, much to the chagrin of friends I think, next time I want to get down to writing, Outlook gets closed, Skype turned off, GTalk exited. Just me and my thoughts.
Sometimes, you just have to turn off to get some work done.
