Nintendo is sure seeing a lot of legal action lately, and most of it isn’t good.
Hillcrest Labs, a maker of motion-controlled technology that it claims is similar to that of the Wii video game system, has filed a patent-infringement suit against Nintendo.
Rockville-based Hillcrest Labs holds patents for a handheld three-dimensional pointing device and a navigation interface display system that graphically organizes content for display on a TV.
Hillcrest filed a complaint Aug. 20 with the U.S. International Trade Commission in D.C. and a separate patent infringement suit in the U.S. District Court in Maryland against Nintendo related to the Wii video game system.
“Leading consumer electronics companies, not all of whom have been disclosed publicly, have already licensed Hillcrest’s technology for use in their products,” Hillcrest Labs said in a statement. “While Hillcrest Labs has a great deal of respect for Nintendo and the Wii, Hillcrest Labs believes that Nintendo is in clear violation of its patents and has taken this action to protect its intellectual property rights.”
Let’s hope this gets resolved quickly.
