Hines Ward of the Pittsburgh Steelers has played a vital role in two Super Bowl championships. As a reward, Ward signed a four-year contract extension with the Steelers that will pay him more than $20 million.

The 33-year-old wide receiver will now be under contract until after the 2013 season. Prior to this extension, Ward was going to be a free agent after the end of the 2009 NFL season.
Even as Ward’s speed has declined, he remains a very good wide receiver. He’s regarded by many as the best blocking wideout in the NFL and he has a knack for coming up with the key catches when needed most.
Last season, Ward had 81 catches for 1,043 yards and seven touchdowns. The best year of his career came in 2002 when he had 112 catches, 1,329 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
Ward has also become an emotional leader that the rest of the team looks to during tough times. This contract, which will save Pittsburgh some money in the short-term, is worth every penny for the Steelers.
