Hirai Says Video Game Economy is A-OK. PS: No PS3 Price Cut

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai says we’re all okay. Even though the economy is going down the hoooole as Plucky Duck used to say (anyone remember that, or am I the only old person here?), the entertainment industry will weather the storm. That’s why you’re not getting a Playstation 3 price cut this Christmas. Oh, and Santa saw you dress up in your sister’s clothes, so you’re on the Naughty list. He never stops watching.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Hirai argued that a price cut for the Playstation 3 isn’t justified since the PS3 offers more value in its shiny black casing than consoles half its price.
Mr Hirai argues that the basic Xbox has no hard disk drive while the PS3 plays high-definition Blu-Ray movies as standard. “When you really compare apples to apples, then I think we have a very good value proposition,” he said.
Unless you don’t care about Blu-Ray. Oops.
Hirai also talks about the economy with the Financial Times, arguing that games will thrive since more people are staying home for their entertainment:
In common with the rest of the industry, Mr Hirai expects video games to be resilient in the economic downturn, as consumers buy cheap home entertainment rather than go out.
“As long as we can generate excitement, then we will be less affected than other industries,” he said.
Seeing as going out for a dinner and a movie costs far more than an average copy of Kill ‘em All, I really think he has a point. Then again I might just be saying that to comfort myself. If the game industry tanks, I’m going to have to do the blind orphan thing and sell pencils.
