Hiring Tips for Startup Companies

When interviewing potential employees, there are a number of things you should look for when hiring for a startup company. Startups require a special type of individual. Some potential employees just wouldn’t thrive in a startup environment.

Here are some startup company hiring tips:

Find self motivators
Self motivators are worth their weight in gold for startups. With so much to do and so little time, these type of employees will figure things out on their own much quicker.

Look for chemistry
Especially for smaller startup companies, chemistry between employees is important. If you don’t foresee chemistry, move along to the next applicant.

Offer incentives
Workers who will put in the effort for incentives are the type of employees you should look for as a startup. Clock punchers need not apply.

Take you time
Especially now with all the people looking for jobs, don’t rush into hiring someone for your startup. Take your time until you find the best fit!

Great tips. It’s easy to forget that hiring for a start-up is an entirely different proposition than that of an established company. Most important is the self-motivation aspect mentioned. Start-ups require employees to wear many different hats also.

Good post. The self-motivation aspect is so important. With small teams every person needs to be looking to maximize how much value they are bringing to the company. This leaves no room for someone who wants to just be told what to do.

Another tip I would add is to really use the 3 month trial period. If someone is not bringing the value you expected in that first 3 months, there is no room for them.
