Home Depot Cashes In on CFL Technology

June 30, 2008 by Allison Boyer

We all know that switching out our old bulbs at the office (and at home) and replacing them with CFL versions is better for the environment and our pocketbooks. It seems like bigger businesses are starting to catch on as well. My one question: What took you so long?

Home Depot has announced that they’ll be replacing all of their showroom lights to CFL bulbs by 2008. In other words, all of those bulbs in display lamps will now be energy-efficient. Projected savings for Home Depot? $16 Million.

In addition, they’ll be opening CFL recycling programs at all 1,973 US locations. You’ll be able to drop off any unbroken expired CFL bulbs for free on your next Home Depot shopping trip. They’re already running this program successfully in Canada.

Way to go, Home Depot. Hopefully other businesses will also be making these changes soon.
