How Many Small Businesses Have Blogs?

January 3, 2008 by Liz Fuller

(businessandblogging.com) This week the New York Times published an article titled, Blogging’s a Low-Cost High Return Marketing Tool . It cited a survey that indicated “only 5 percent of businesses with fewer than 100 employees have blogs. ”

only 5% of small businesses with fewer than 100 employeesthat doesn’t sound like much does it?

But do you know how many small businesses there are in the U.S.?

I do.

Or at least I know how many as of the 2004 Census update.

25.4 million

And do you know how many of those had fewer than 100 employees?

25.3 million

(That’s right, only about 100,000 companies in the US have 100 employees or more)

And what’s 5% of 25.3 million? approx. 1.25 million.

Over a million small business owners have a blog.

So, let’s go back to the beginning:

Blogging can be a low-cost marketing tool that offers a high return on investment.

Over a million small business owners think so.
