How Much To Charge For A Blog? Ask Anne, The Pro Writer

Hi Anne,

Do you think $5 per blog is a fair pay rate?

Thanks,
C

Hi C
,

Great question! And there’s no single answer. Five dollars a post equals $35 a week if you post daily, which isn’t much. But wait!

  • Is there also a revenue share? If there is and you get popular, that can increase your pay rate significantly.
  • Is it a topic you’re passionate about? If it is, it probably won’t take you long to write most entries and a blog can be a great showcase of your writing.
  • Can you use your blog to sell ebooks, drive traffic to a newsletter, etc. etc. etc? If you can, the low rate of pay may make it worth it to you.

So the real question does $5 a post work for you? Consider your interest, how much time it will take you to do each post, and what you’ll get from the whole deal.

Thanks for asking!

That sounds like good advice, but doesn’t it limit you as to the content you can include?

  2. Anne Wayman says:

Chris, I don’t know what you mean by limiting content… would you explain? Thanks

  3. Chris Wood says:

I mean does it restrict the subjects that can be discussed? I don’t mean anything obviously profane or disgusting, but subject matters like relationships.

  4. Anne Wayman says:

It would depend on the blog… for example, I’m not restricted here, but the emphasis is supposed to be on freelance writing so I stick close to that, but you’ll find occasional pieces on politics and life… is that what you mean?

It’s a great question (I get asked the same quite often) and I really enjoyed your response Anne. If you can find 3 or 4 blogs with subject matters you are passionate about and can crank out the posts ~ than for an hour so so a day you can add an extra $400-$500 of income per month. I know from personal experience that I don’t have time to keep up some of my blogs … and if someone approached me to post for $5/per … and if they caught me on the right day LOL I’d be all over it. If you can find blogs with a subject matter that you enjoy (just do a search i.e. blog + wine) you might find some takers. If the blog owner is blogging because they enjoy writing they might not be interested … but if the blog is up for AdSense or affilite products or any type of monetization they might not be a “writer” but more of an internet marketer and they might hire you. Good luck *SmiLes* Suzanne

True, although I think the best combo is a per post plus a revenue share…
