How “Raw” Will I Go?

I do everything I can to watch what I eat.  Sometimes, too much.  Already a vegetarian.  Thinking about going vegan.  But first, I think I might go to a “sub-class” of vegetarian nutrition–the raw food vegetarian.

It makes sense. Raw vegetables, fruits and greens are the healthiest things you can put into your body.   But there are people out there who are eating what I call “raw beyond the pale”–consuming raw eggs, raw dairy products, and yes, raw meats.  Organ meats in particular.

I can do the raw fruits and vegetables.  Nuts, legumes, etc., too.  But a raw kidney snack?  Come on.  I mean, come on.  These individuals call themselves “Native Nutritionists,” and they try to eat like ancient tribes did many, many years ago.  I’m sorry, but we have come a long way.  For example, we have refrigeration.  And electricity.  And safe drinking water.

I can see the case for raw vegetables and fruits.  Some raw foods do contain living enzymes that aid digestion, and are destroyed when cooked.  So I am going to experiment a little with raw food vegetarianism. It may advance my ongoing quest for inner peace, outer calm and a healthier body. But going native?  Sorry to say, liver and onions as a kid was bad enough.  A big, flopping slab of live liver as an adult–no way.  Not happening.  To everyone out there who is giving it a try, bless you for your bravery, and be sure you get your shots.

Peace.

  1. Raw meat? Yikes. I can’t even do much of the raw veggies since I have braces.

I eat high-raw, and love it. Good luck to ya!

  3. I could do sashimi, but that’s about it in the raw meat department.

I do need to eat more raw foods though…it just stinks when you really like to cook. There’s something so fun about flipping pancakes in a skillet, ya know? :)

I haven’t visited in a while. This was so funny. And as much of a meat lover as I am, NO WAY to raw meat. Can you say e-coli???

And I agree with the commenter, I love to cook too. But I do like this idea for the many days i am too tired/lazy to cook. That will have to happen on the days I am pretending to be a vegetarian.

  5. Uh, raw meat? Like Fit, I can do sashimi and sushi, but raw kidneys? Um, no. And humans have been cooking meat for a very very long time. Millions of years.

    Mmmm, sushi!

That’s pretty intense with the raw meat and all. Don’t think I could handle it! I’m interested in hearing about how your transition goes with being a raw food vegetarian! Keep us posted:)

  7. It seems so ignorant to me when people say they are eating as our ancestors did long ago because they think it is healthier…do these people not realize that the life span back then was like….40 years? THERE IS A REASON we have evolved people!

I’m with you ModelBehavior! The life expectancy in the western world has never been so high as it is now. I mean, just how long do people want to live? Your body degenerates eventually, no matter what you do! And with that living, how much enjoyment/pleasure do you want to sacrifice? I have to say that eating in and out is one of my favourite pastimes. Its a time I share with friends and family and it’s a very precious time with lots of laughter, based around food. I dont think it would be the same crunching away with a plate of raw veggies, do you?

Don’t get me wrong, you don’t have to binge eat on crap processed food to enjoy eating. I mean, just eat a lovely healthy meal washed down with a couple glasses of wine – Heaven!

I’m not disrespecting your efforts Susan. I hope you DO find more inner peace. I’m just saying it would never work for me. Food, music and good company is when I am most balanced. :o)

    All the best

    Tusc :o)
