How Social Networking Helped Me Get This Writing Gig

With this month’s theme at Interview Chatter being social networking, I thought I would tell you about how social networking helped me get this job.

My first experience with blogging came by way of my personal gardening blog that I started last summer.  Through that blog I’ve e-met tons of great bloggers who have helped me tremendously.  Then, a couple of months ago I discovered Twitter (as if I don’t have enough Internet obsessions already),  a micro blogging community.  One day, half jokingly, I put a message on Twitter that said “if you pray, please pray for me a writing job.”  Within minutes, a fellow gardening blogger who is also a writer at About.com emailed me to say good luck, and offered two links where she said she finds most of her freelance writing gigs.  One of those links was to the b5media blog The Golden Pencil on the Business Channel.  That’s where I found the Interview Chatter co-blogger job listing.  You can guess the rest.

In 2008, social networking allows us access to more job resources than we’ve ever had.  And you never know when someone who you’ve connected with because you share the same hobby may have a lead on a job.  So get out there and network!  I’m sure there is an awesome opportunity out there that you are the perfect person for.  Oh, and if you are addicted to Twitter like me, feel free to follow me (I’m InterviewChat_g).
