How to Add Memory to Your Computer
Adding memory to your computer is very easy. First you need to know what kind of memory your computer takes. There are different speeds and types – PC3200, DDR400, etc. To find out which type of memory your computer takes, consult the computer manufacturer (Dell, Toshiba, etc) or the manufacturer of the motherboard in the system.
Once you know what kind of memory you’ll need, buy it. You can usually pick up inexpensive memory from a computer show, best buy or at hundreds of online retailers such as New Egg.
When you have the memory needed, open the case. Each case is different but usually the side of the case will have a release latch or will slide open after removing a few screws.
I built my computer several years ago and chose the Microstar KT400 Ultra as my motherboard. This image, courtesy of Microstar, demonstrates where the memory modules attach to the board.

Inserting the memory is a piece of cake. Make sure the clips on the end of the slot are open and note how the gap in the memory pins is keyed. It will only slide into the slot one way so you can’t mess it up without really trying hard. With the memory stick keyed properly, press one end of the chip into one of the clips. Press the other end down into the slot until it clicks into place. You’ll note the slot clips snap up on their own to secure the memory stick.
Job done.
Note: Please be aware of Electrostatic Discharge and take appropriate preventive steps to avoid it.

Hello, I’ve been making a new computer and i took out the old ram and switched it to my brothers.
It is the same type except it is a 512 MB instead of the 64 MB that was in there.
But, is there an installation instructions for the comp to know i added memory or not??
As long as:
1. you have an OS that can read 512mb RAM
2. used the same memory type (im guessing SDRAM)
3. your motherboard accepts the 512mb (try upgrading the bios, if it doesnt detect it but be careful!)
then your bios and OS should be able to detect and use the newly installed 512mb
