I've been an editor and a freelancer off and on for about 30 years and the one thing I've noticed more than anything else is that correspondence has become generally more sloppy. If I'm hiring somebody for a writing job and the pitch letter comes with poor punctuation, bogus grammar, and obvious misspellings there's a pretty good chance I'm not going to be interested in hiring said applicant.
