Tax time is a natural time of year to choose an accounting firm. However, you may need to find a Certified Public Accountant any month of the year. Selecting a good accountant is important to your business, and while the chore can seem overwhelming, keeping a few key things in mind will make the task easier.
Choosing an accountant is not as simple as googling for the most geographically convenient firm. It’s crucial to choose the right professional for the job. Ideally, you want to develop a long-term relationship with your accountant or CPA. This person should be a valuable advisor to your business, not just someone who files the right forms by state and federal deadlines. A good accountant can provide a lot of of business advice beyond journal entries and tax returns.
Keep the following in mind when choosing an accountant:
- Specific Experience
Choose an accountant who has experience in your particular type of business. - Holistic Advice
An accountant should be able to help you in personal matters as well as business. Choose someone who has experience in the particular type of investments you hold or retirement strategies you’re pursuing. - Chemistry
You’ll be sharing a good deal of personal information with your accountant. You want to find someone you feel comfortable talking to. Make an appointment for a face to face meeting before you make a decision. - Availability
Make sure your accountant or another reliable member of the staff is available (at least by phone) year round. Many accountants (especially those who specialize in tax work) take extended vacations throughout the summer. - Enthusiasm
The best accountants want to help you and your business succeed. Look for accountants who eagerly offer input and advice about you business plans.
The best way to find a great professional in my opinion is always through word of mouth. Finding an accountant is no different. Ask around and keep this information in mind and you’re a lot more likely to find someone you can trust and learn from for years to come.
